Do you bet on the horse, the course or the jockey?
When evaluating a specific idea (horse), the market or vertical (course) is extremely important as most of the time the idea that becomes successful isn’t the idea that the team started out with. And often times, the management (jockey) that is in place isn't the same one that started it. The horse and course need to be evaluated together as much as they are evaluated apart. And the jockey needs to be evaluated, along with and without the horse and the course.
Why become a member? For many of us it's a way to build relationships with other angels, to share knowledge and experience, and to share the due diligence work load. Having many angels with diverse experience and insight, can help all make better informed decisions, especially when we are evaluating "the horse, the course and the jockey" on deals outside our own fields of experience and expertise.
Another good reason, is that we have a director that searches high and low for new, exciting innovations and game-changing opportunities, not only in the Austin community, but also from universities and global business plan competitions across the state. She enjoys relationships with angel networks from California to New York. She attends networking events, conventions, start up competitions, and gets the press. Do you have time to this for yourself?
And one more good reason to become a member is that advising and mentoring, gives us all the opportunity to give back to the community, to share our knowledge with new entrepreneurs and enjoy the challenges, the "brain candy", the excitement that comes with building successful companies. And we plan to make money, too! Membership in the Hill Country Angel Network is extended to individuals who share our vision and will actively contribute to our process because we want as many angels and as many connections as possible sitting around our table to better the chances of a win at the finish line. And the party at the finish line is certainly a lot more fun with friends and fellow angels.
